DG'S LETTER & DISTRICT NEWS May 2007

REDISTRICTING AND MEMBERSHIP

Owing to a tendency of dropping numbers in almost all the Southern African Rotary Districts, redistricting of the area has become a necessity, as was pointed out in the April Newsletter.

A preliminary recommendation decided upon at a meeting of representatives of all Southern African Districts involved in the redistricting process, has been forwarded to Rotary International for consideration and approval. The implications for District 9250 will be dealt with by DGE Kobla Quashie, once Rotary International has accepted the approved plan, since finalization of the planning process will only start coming about in the new Rotary Year.

Implementation of the recommended plan will be take place at some future date, as determined by RI. Since the District was required to elect a DGNN (Albie Van De Venter), I take it for granted that the date of implementation will possibly be only after the completion on his year as Governor. Rotary International, however, will determine that aspect of the plan to redistrict.

Having said that, I would like to identify myself with the recommendations of PDG Eben Brümmer in his Membership Newsletter. We need to carry on strengthening our existing clubs and chartering new clubs, because Rotary has a mammoth task in helping our African Communities in moving out of poverty, hunger and illiteracy and into a new era of self-sufficiency.
The stronger we are, the better we will be able to help in making others more comfortable and free from debilitating circumstances.

Let us remain part of those who are seeking a better world!

FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE TEAM FROM DISTRICT 7010, CANADA

The Team from District 7010, the District of the GSE Team arriving on Monday 14 May, will actually be in South Africa by this coming weekend, 12 May.

District Governor and Governor Ann, John and Marylou Tomlinson seen here with DG Chris and DG Ann Enlim, will be two of the members of the Friendship Exchange Team. We wish them a very warm welcome to District 9250 and to our District Conference Thank you Janie and the Rotarians of Polokwane for heeding the call for help!

Let me have more photos from clubs that have participated.

Polio Plus

Some photos that we took on Saturday during the Polio campaign. Four of our members: myself, Sandy, Kim and Arij went to some deep rural areas and gave polio drops - what an experience!

We'll definitely help again next time. It's great to be involved in an organisation like Rotary - to be able to help where help is needed. (Mihandra Polokwane sponsored the vehicle)

Group Study Exchange

The Virginians from the USA have arrived. I wish them a unique Southern African experience, a good memory that will always remind them of the exceptional work done by Rotary to promote peace and understanding and better international relations.

And finally - welcome back to our Team from their visit to Virginia.

From preliminary reports it seems that they were much appreciated ambassadors, for their countries and for Rotary in 9250. I hope to welcome them in the near future as the newest Rotarians of their Rotary Clubs. They agreed before they left to join Rotary on their return and their clubs need to take this up immediately. We lose too many of our Alumni; they should be a prime source of new Rotarians.

Semi-Annual Dues

A number of clubs have not done anything as yet.

Please give this immediate attention.
Assistant Governor's, may I ask you to check with each one of your clubs?

Updating membership lists

A number of clubs are experiencing difficulties with Semi-Annual Dues owing to the fact that membership lists are not kept up to date with RI. The result: they are billed for Rotarians who are no longer members of clubs and RI will continue to bill clubs for those members until membership lists are up to date. Clubs can update lists on the RI website, provided they have submitted the names of their presidents and secretaries to RI for the International Directory.
FAILURE TO DO SO, EITHER THIS YEAR OR LAST YEAR, WILL HAVE TWO RESULTS!!!!!! ?

ACCESS TO THE RI BUSINESS PORTAL WILL BE DENIED ?
SIGNATURES OF PRESIDENTS ON MATCHING GRANT FORMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTABLE

N.B. Please heed this warning!

Gaborone Tirelo Rotary Club: Ramotswa School for the Deaf & SOS Village House No 14 at their Christmas Party, December 2006 in Ramotswa. The photo shows the children, helped by Rotarians and school staff, receiving starters of hot dogs, from President(Acting Santa) Guru Gurumoorthi. They had a wonderful day with a three course meal and drinks, bouncy castle and games organised by Rotarians and teachers. The hi-light came when 'Santa' arrived, with horn blaring, to deliver a huge sack of Christmas gifts for the children. This annual party is a 'must' in the Rotary year.

Gaborone Tirelo Rotary Club - Tlamelo Feeding Scheme, Old Naledi, Gaborone: Tlamelo is supported by GaboroneTirelo Rotary Club with food distribution from SPAR Supermarket via Rotarians on a weekly basis, and, shown here, a presentation of 100 blankets to Tlamelo Coordinator Mathata Mosekwa (pictured right) and his asssistant Tato (pictured left) by Rotarians Georgina Durrant & Sandra Stonehill. The children were delighted and were eager to select a colour.
The Tlamelo Trust was established in 1998 with its primary concern being the welfare of the orphaned and destitute children of Old Naledi. The 150+ children receive a hot meal every day, Monday to Friday, every week of the year.
